Meet Josh Rodriguez, a PA Making a Lasting Impact

Each year, October 6–12 marks PA Week, a time to recognize the contributions of PAs. This year’s theme, “PAs Go Beyond,” reflects how ApolloMD PAs combine clinical expertise, teamwork, and compassion to make a lasting impact on patients and communities.

Josh Rodriguez, PA-C, an emergency medicine PA at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, demonstrates how PAs go beyond in their daily practice and patient care. With five years of experience as a PA, including previous practice in urgent care, and nearly three years with ApolloMD, he brings strong clinical experience and dedication to his role.

A Day in the Emergency Room

Days in the emergency department are highly variable but always busy. When Josh begins a shift, he assesses where help is needed, checking in with providers and nurses to determine which patients require urgent attention. Because the hospital serves a large area with limited outpatient access, patient cases range from minor complaints to complex conditions requiring coordination with multiple specialties. Through it all, Josh focuses on ensuring each patient feels respected and heard. “No matter how hectic the ER gets, I want every patient to walk away feeling listened to and cared for,” he says.

The Rewards of Being a PA

What draws Josh to this role is the combination of medical reasoning and human connection. He says,

“I enjoy combining my interest in medicine with the clues from a patient’s history to figure out what is causing their issue. It’s unique to be trusted with someone’s health and personal story.”

Helping patients feel better, easing fears, and guiding them toward solutions are what make the role so meaningful. Josh finds fulfillment in helping patients in many ways, through diagnoses, procedures, or simply providing reassurance and understanding.

Teamwork and Patient Impact

For Josh, collaboration isn’t optional in emergency medicine, it’s essential. He frequently works alongside attending physicians, other APCs, nurses, and techs to ensure patients receive the best possible outcomes. “Without any one member of our team, the job either can’t get done or is exponentially more difficult. Working strokes, STEMIs, and other critical situations is where teamwork really shines.”

Some of Josh’s most memorable experiences come from listening carefully to patients and families. He recalls a child whose parents pursued further evaluation despite earlier reassurances, leading to a life-changing diagnosis. In another case, a middle-aged man with abdominal symptoms was found to have significant pathology after Josh pursued additional workup. These moments reinforced the importance of listening and taking patient concerns seriously.

PA Week Reflections

PA Week gives Josh a chance to reflect on the profession’s impact. He notes that PAs bridge gaps, meet community needs, and balance confidence with humility. While many PAs will celebrate by continuing to care for patients, the recognition of their contributions makes the week especially meaningful.

This PA Week, ApolloMD celebrates Josh Rodriguez, PA-C, and all our PAs who go beyond every day to provide exceptional care to patients and communities.
