Finding EXTRAordinary in the Ordinary

Sarah Valvano, PA-C is an Advanced Practice Clinician practicing emergency medicine at St. Joseph’s Health in New Jersey.

Reason for Patient Visit:
A 65-year-old male presented through the ED for syncope vs seizure and then was placed in ED Observation for further work-up. The ED Observation team, which included Sarah Valvano, PA-C, managed the patient and kept the family and patient informed of their continuum of care.

Patient Outcome:
The patient was discharged from the hospital with an adjustment to his seizure medications.

EXTRAordinary Care

From the patient’s daughter:

“Sarah went above and beyond for my father: she listened to our concerns and took action to answer our outstanding questions. All of the things that we had been waiting on, she made happen: she immediately resumed one of my father’s medications as soon as she found out that it had been held for nearly 48 hours; she immediately requested that physical therapists visit my father, since he had not been out of bed in nearly that same amount of time; and she immediately requested cardiology to read the results from an exam taken the day prior.

We met with countless physicians, APNs, RNs, and PAs, and I can confidently say that Sarah was the most helpful, kind, and attentive staff members who treated my father. St. Joe’s is lucky to have her.”

“Sarah is a model clinician who not only listened to the patient’s family to understand the concern and address the issue but took action to ensure the patients mobility and overall well-being. Her caring nature continues to shine with each patient interaction.”
