A Calling in the Emergency Department

Each November, National Nurse Practitioner Week highlights the trusted voices and proven care of NPs across the nation. At ApolloMD, those qualities are lived out daily by Jenene (Jenny) Roberts, NP-C, an Emergency Department Advanced Practice Clinician at Wellstar Cobb Hospital, who has spent her entire nine-year NP career, and nearly three decades in emergency medicine, serving patients with skill, empathy, and resilience.
Jenny’s journey began long before becoming a Nurse Practitioner. After 18 years as an ER nurse, she sought new ways to expand her impact while staying true to the work she loved most.
“The Emergency Department is where I found my purpose, where I continue to grow, serve, and lead with intention.”
For Jenny, no two days in the ER are ever alike. Each shift demands adaptability, teamwork, and a steady hand amid constant change. “A day in the ED is anything but typical,” she explains. “It’s walking into chaos and choosing calm. It’s treating patients in the worst moments of their lives with skill, speed, and compassion.”
It’s washing off blood, swallowing stress, and calmly moving on to the next patient with a reassuring voice. She reflects, “Sometimes it’s being called names while handing someone a sandwich, knowing it might be their only meal that day, and still choosing empathy.” Her steady presence and compassion continue to define her approach to patient care.
Beyond her clinical work, Jenny finds deep fulfillment in mentoring new Advance Practice Clinicians as they begin their careers in emergency medicine. Remembering her own early days, she strives to create an environment where new clinicians feel supported and confident.
“I remember that feeling well. I make it my mission to be their guide, their support, and their safe space.” Her mentorship extends beyond sharing clinical advice. “I offer my experience, my perspective, and my phone number. No one should feel alone in this work,” she shares.
That supportive mindset has helped shape the culture of her team, where collaboration and compassion go hand in hand. Jenny’s calm confidence and genuine care have made her not only a mentor, but a steady leader in a demanding environment.
Jenny often describes teamwork as the heartbeat of the emergency department. In the fast-paced world of emergency medicine, collaboration between nurses, physicians, techs, and paramedics is essential to providing safe and efficient care.
Her “Cobb ER Family,” as she calls them, functions as a closely connected unit built on trust and respect. “We communicate constantly, lift each other up, and step in when someone needs a break or even just a hug,” she says. “We’re more than colleagues. We’re a family.”
That camaraderie, Jenny believes, transforms a challenging environment into a supportive one. It is what allows her team to perform their best, even in the most critical moments.
While clinical skill is essential, Jenny’s greatest impact often comes through compassion. She recalls one patient in particular, a woman who had survived a violent sexual assault and came to the ER scared, broken, and ashamed. Jenny took time to listen without judgment, hold space for her pain, and promise to stand by her if her case went to court.
That woman thanked her through tears, and the strength she showed reminded Jenny that healing isn’t just clinical, it’s human. Moments like that continue to remind her why she has dedicated 27 years to emergency medicine and why every “thank you,” no matter how small, still means everything.
For Jenny, being a Nurse Practitioner means being a trusted voice in the lives of others. Patients depend on her expertise, but they also rely on her empathy and presence. She views that trust as both an honor and a responsibility that is earned through consistency, communication, and compassion.
Jenny’s dedication to her patients, her team, and the next generation of clinicians reflects the best of the NP profession. Her leadership extends beyond clinical excellence. It lives in every moment of reassurance, teamwork, and mentorship that defines her daily work.
At ApolloMD, we’re proud to celebrate Nurse Practitioners like Jenny, whose proven care and trusted voices strengthen the health of our patients and communities.
